[Webmaster note: thepaulthomas kindly invited me to review this film, and outlined some objectivist interest in the email, reproduced below. I believe this is a good start of a review anyway.]
If I could write a review that would do it justice, I would. But if you
haven't seen it, you really should. It may sound like a silly
suggestion ( I think Rand HATED horror movies, correct me if I'm wrong) but I
really do think it's one of the truly great objectivist films, depicting
man's struggle to the death resisting collectivism. The copious amounts
of blood and gore are entirely appropriate for depicting "The Thing" as
the ultimate representation of collectivism. I'm not kidding. I
sincerely think it's a movie that objectivists will really appreciate.
Strangely, John Carpenter did an about-face around five years later when he
indicted "capitalist greed" with his movie "They Live". I still think
"They Live" is a pretty cool and underappreciated flick for other reasons
though. Decent Sci-fi idea overall. Maybe I will try and come up with a
coherent review of "The Thing". Until then, see it for yourself.
