The last film of Stanley Kubrick started causing a stir with
his little "CRUISE", "KIDMAN", "KUBRICK", "EYES WIDE SHUT" teaser trailer in which Tom and Nichole are making out in front of a large mirror with Nichole being topless. Right off the bat you were obviously thinking "Oh, typical Stanley and his way to shock the world." Then came July 14 and there were allot of mixed reviews of the film. There was praise and their was abhorness. Nonetheless, there were satisfied and unsatisfied moviegoers as some were intrigued and the rest shocked. Some say
the praise for the film were simply done out of the fact that Stanley had created it and it was their job to like him because he's a filmmaker icon.
My views on this film are simple. I liked this film. I liked it because it was a good sexual phsycological film that did it's homework. Now I'm not just saying that because Stanley directed it. Infact, I not very fond of Stanley Kubrick's early work. I disliked "A Clockwork Orange" and thought "2001: A Space Odessey" was a mistake (Oh no!). Did I just say that? Yep! This is probably the only Stanley Kubrick film that I throughly enjoyed. Now I'm probably gonna get bashed for saying that about
"2001" but, hey, it's my opinion and there's no use in trying to change my mind because you'd just be wasting your time and effort. Moving on, "Eyes Wide Shut wasn't the best film of the year but I think it really should get some attention above the fact that Kubrick directed it and just be seen as WHAT Stanley directed. I'll say this, he is a master of the frame and he knows what he's after. Every single shot in this picture is a picture. It's a beautiful scene with light and dark colors! that are pleasurable to the eye. That's a "A". Now lets drop down to
about a "b-" in the acting department.
